Default Hott sizzle water

So my water to my main tank is crazing right around 80 degrees. I'm worried about cooking stuff. I have a 150 watt MH. It currently has a 10k bulb. If I moved to a 20k bulb would my temp go down? My light was 4 inches about the water so I moved it to like 10 inches away. My temp still didn't go down. So I checked my heater and its set at 77*. Any thoughts????

What's wrong with 80 degrees? I thought 78-82 was the appropriate range. BTW, I would take out the heater unless your temperature really drops at night. What pumps do you have in your tank? I currently have two 2500 RIOs, two 3100 RIOs and one Hydor Koralia 4 and my temp goes from 78 to 81 but it's usually around 79-80. Too hot? I thought that was perfect. I have a fan on during the day when the light is on.

Got it. Do you have a fan blowing air accross the sump? That might help a bit. If I keep my on 24/7, my temp can get to and stay below 78 (house is at 74-75).

You can get a chiller for $360 shipped...I did. I don't think 80 degrees is excessive...how much is your daily temp swing? Usually, a 4-5 degree max is widely accepted.

there is absolutly nothing wrong with 80 degrees I dont think there is anything wrong with 85.Th problem would be if its 80 now and 85 in an hour.Temp swings are the bad things.

Its 80 from 20 noon till about 8pm. Then it starts going down. My heater is at 77 degrees so It doesnt go below that. So Nativ you think I should be alright? Will the temperature go up once i put stuff in there?

I dont see 3 degrees in 12 hours as being a problem.I am sure fish in the wild withstand a much greater swing than that. But they happen over long periods of time, mostly overnight I guess.

I have said it before 85 is not too hot for your tank. I agree that temprature spikes or large 10 degree swings from day to night are not good but I would be ok with my tank running at 80. This time of year my 125 gal reef with the halides on runs 84 to 85 degrees and drops off at night to about 80 to 82. So if my tank runs at that temp why shouldn't yours. Or should I say why can't yours? I posted a sight some time back about water temp and corals. It talked about tempratures in the ocean where corals are collected and most are in water that is 85 degrees. As a matter of fact 78 might be a bit cool for corals to do well in. My heaters are set for 80 degrees and I feel that the water temp should rise and fall a bit like it would at night in the ocean.

You could fan the water in your fuge isnt thjat the point where the least ammount of water is? Meaning if your blew a fan on that it would cool alot fast than trying to cool a 55 gallon tank.. just a thought.

I turned the heater all the way down then put it back on 77 degrees. It was still mid 80s. Then I got the cheapest crapest fan from target and put it on the top right under my MH and its now 77 degrees I may need to crank the heat back up...
