Default reef sump vs wet dry

hi folks i went out and purchased a wet dry filter w/refugium for my 55 gal reef tank that i am starting. the lfs guy said the reef sump would be better for a reef tank; but also said the wet dry would be ok cuz it had the refugium to help keep down nitrates. i am a total newbie, so all this confusing info is frustrating. the reef sump just seems to have a place for the skimmer and this sort of "sock" looking thing. how is the water cleaned/filtered....through the skimmer? did i buy the wrong thing again? I haven't even opened the box yet, so i'm thinking i can exchange it. people keep saying there are ways to work with the trickle filter, but i'd really like to have the right thing from the start. I'm not technical at all so i'd like to keep things as SIMPLE as possible. (so when u reply, please dumb it down for me)

thanks in advance for your help.

Do a search on bioballs or wet drys. This topic has been beaten to death.

I have a wet/dry overflow, just replace the bio-balls with live rock rubble, no biggie, you will be fine, just get some powerheads and lots of Live rock..

Terrific.... thanks so much for your kind response. i apologize for my ignorance. i did try to research before i asked the question, but it seems the more questions i ask, and the more i read, the more conflicting information i get.

thanks again.
