well a wet dry is probably the most recomended on here. i would spend the money mainly on a protein skimmer. there not as important in a FOWLR then in a reef but still worth it. from there i would figure out how much rock you want to keep, this will help you plan out your filter. LR is basically a biological filter and with the 1-1.5 lbs pre gallon it becomes very efficient. anything less will have to be made up for in the filter. i would research what fish you like the most and make sure that everything can co-exist with eachother and then go from there. get all the equipment and get the tank going before you worry about fish though. also the lighting wont need to be a high end unit. standard flourescent will work just fine! i would use a standard t-5 if it were me. i think they make your fish's colors stand out more. i dont think it makes much sense to use live sand so just do arganite or CC (crushed coral).

I agree with everything Sweet Tang said. I would hold off on the protein skimmer and see if you need it. Fish can handle nitrates unlike reefs can.
