Default Beginner steps

OK, I've got all of my equipment (R/O DI unit, over-tank protein skimmer, cannister filter, cured live rock, live sand), and will be ready to begin filling my tank this weekend. I'm struggling a little bit with the exact sequence of events that will work best. I'm going with FOWLR. I've seen it suggested to fill with water first, then add live rock, and then sand, but I'm looking for some confirmation on that sequence. Also, when would I begin to turn on the skimmer or filter? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. fill tank
2. add LR
3. add sand
4. turn skimmer on
5. turn filter on

you dont HAVE to do it in that order, but that is what i would do.

I don't think you need a cannister filter if you have a decent skimmer, especially with a 30 gallon tank. A cannister filter is just one more thing you need to clean and clean regularly or you set yourself up for all sorts of nasties.

I did the same thing, but then some people dont like to do that because they claim if you get some sand difting fish ir inverts it will loosen the rock. i personally have not had nay trouble, but i could see how it could happen.

better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the help. I did debate long and hard about the cannister. Posted the question here and got one vote yes, and one vote no, so not much help. Anyway I decided to start out with it, and if I have trouble keeping up with it, I will discontinue and just use a powerhead with the live rock.
