I really would like to know how much flow you get out of that manifold system. I tried a couple of variations of it and gave up. Maybe I was doing something wrong but unless I necked down the 45 degree fittings I got next to no flow going thru them. 4-5- 1/2" fittings is the same as 1- 1" fitting unless your pushing 1500 from your return you get volume but no substantial flow.

I don't like the flo either. So, I kept my 2 Seio 620's in the tank. I thought with the mag 18 I would get decent flow, I was wrong.

Hey, you guys look experienced in sumps! Would you mind checking out my thread I posted in equipment titled 'sump water flow?'. I put a few pictures of my in tank sump that I am trying to figure out how the dern thing works! It looks like it should be a simple common sense deal but I'm just not getting it?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Dana

Yeah, I couldnt get the flow to make a difference either. The pipe would have to get smaller further down the line and your pump would have to put pressure in the line to make it work. Just like a heat plenum works in your house if you have forced air.

I'm going to claim ignorance in all things sump! Could you explain in detail what exactly you'd do if you were me to make this work? It sounds like you're saying to make the white tube shorter.... then the rest I'm not sure....

Sorry for so many questions, I'm tempted just to drain the sump and use just the tank water, protein skimmer and power heads! This is getting to be too complicated for me!

Thanks!
Dana

By the way, would you happen to know what type of tank I have? If I at least new the brand or type I could learn more about it!

Thanks again!

I have some available. I can put a good amount in a 1g bag. What would be a good way to ship? Maybe the flat rate priority box, i think that's only $5 something. I would ship that anywhere in the us for $20. I could send the sandwich bag sized cheato for $10, and that's the USPS flat rate box. I have 1 gallon sized bags available once a week and 4 of the sandwich bags available once a week. Iv'e been giving it to my LFS for some credit. He then sells it for $12 and that's half of what i give him.

Email me if your interested we can talk about shipping. Oh and i have never used copper in my tank.

Well, I think this newbie is going to try a few recommendations from a guy at a lfs... showed him the pics and he bounced a couple scenarios off me. Oh, and, because I'm a newbie, I just realized I may have put three or four small live rocks in the wrong side of the overflow (it's not really a sump I guess...) so tonight, those are moving into the other side and hopefully I'll see some water flowing thru the overflow!

I'll let you all know how it goes!

Thanks!
Dana

P.S. Thanks Abaco24 for the attention! I love reading all the info here and gleaning whatever knowledge I happen to find, love this place and the people!

No problem, I'm still compiling my list of equipment so you're leading the class on Aug 07 at this point! keep us posted I'm going for a 75. Post some pics as it gets cleared up.

Can you list what equipment you have so far and maybe show the plumbing and how you hooked it all up. That's whats confusing to me.

Well, come to find out, my sump is really more an overflow! Again, I'll claim ignorance being new at saltwater! But I'm going to remove the few rocks on the bottom of one side and hopefully that'll let the water flow thru the overflow better. Otherwise, I'm going to get some airtubing and create a mini syphon drip to get the water out of that part of my overflow; it fills back up but slowly so maybe I'll end up doing that regardless. I just hate having water just sit there!

As for a sump, guess I don't have one! All I am using, besides the overflow, is a red sea berlin 25-250gal/hr protein skimmer, three power heads circulating the water and a current/orbit 2 twin bulb light set up; 65W, one 10,000k and the other actinic with a couple of tiny moon lights at night. That's it!

I am going to be placing sump rock or small live rock into a section of the overflow to help build up good bacteria and the overflow has a built in skimmer (which isn't working that well I might add!) and I currently have in the tank, 10-15 pounds old live rock, 1 pound live rock from lfs and today (YAY!) am putting 10 more pounds live rock I ordered from online!

I'm also using the step set up posts that you see on the set up page; can't remember who wrote it but it's been working so far! MAN AM I LEARNING PATIENCE!

Today marks the tanks first week of 'life' and as of now all water levels are great except for a small amount of ammonia...

Sorry about the novel, just so excited to have other people to chat with who love this hobby too! (My dh tries hard to be excited with me but, fish just aren't a big thing with him!)

Have a great day!
Dana
