Default UV or Not to UV ? That is the question....

I found this article interesting. I see a lot of UV's on the personal equipment lists of folks tanks.

My general question is how this effects a Refugium since I'd rather have the benefits of the micro critters in a fuge vs killing them off with a UV . According to this the UV will not kill ICK either.

Your views.....

ich works in multiple stages to my knowledge and therefore would not kill it off of the fish, but it will kill it while its floating around lookin for a host. it will have a life cycle so eventually it will die off of the fish but in the time it might do that you fish could die! i would not use a uv with a refugium! this is the info that ive been told!

That's what I'm reading as well, it hurts the benefits of a fuge. Need some more input to either myth bust this or not ! I say BUSTED...no UV with a Fuge.

I read some articles about killing off some of the beneficial bacteria using UV so I turned it off.

I asked KrazyK what he does. He has UV running on his tank and I think intends using it on his 180gal.

I turned mine back on.

If you want a better chance at beating Ich and other parasites, I'd go U/V...

I bought a 57 watt Aqua U/V for my 175...

The higher the wattage the better...

What does UV have to do with pods? I dont run my pods thru the UV so it doesnt affect them. Is this what you are talking about?

It's true UV is not the end all beat all for Ich but when an outbreak occurs It responds to treatmeant much faster and is less likely to kill your live stock. I run 58 watts on my 75 thru 2 units 1 18Watt and 1 40 Watt.

I never said it would be the end.

I said if you want a "better chance" at beating it.

I dont care to much about the pods really as I dont have a mandrin anymore

What brands and wattage per gallon would be helpful. I've seen the reviews at Marine Depot and it appears:

15 watts for 75 ga
25 watts for 100 ga
40 for 200 ga

Is this correct?

On up from there which is beyond my paygrade!

I think Emperor Aquatics and Aqua U/V's are the two top brands with Emperor being # 1

The smart u/v series ones are nice.

The higher the wattage the better from what I've been told, good waterflow through them as well...

I was agreeing with your post if I sounded contradictory it was not meant to be.

Taken from a recent article on Drs F & S:

Correctly introducing new fish to your aquarium is important not only for the health of the new fish, but for your existing fish as well. When incompatible fish are added to an aquarium, the weakest fish will be stressed, which could result in disease that affects all of the inhabitants of the tank. For this reason, we highly recommend that all marine aquariums be equipped with a properly sized UV Sterilizer to reduce the possibility of disease.
