What do you plan on keeping in your tank Flockboss? Fish only? Corals?
Soft corals? LPS corals SPS Corals? Answers to these questions will determine if you have the correct set-up or not.

Good to see you here at RB!

That will work for most softies and some LPS corals. Do your research on the corals as which ones need more light than others and place them high or low in the tank accordingly.

I would make sure your return pump from the sump is giving you 10X the gal tank you have. 90galx10=900gal per hour. This is after you figure raising your water 4-5 feet and accounts for any elbows in your return line.

Make sure the light fixture "fits" your corner tank. I hear some people that have these say lights are hard to make fit over the top of the tank.

Understand your protein skimmer before you start. Know what its for, how it works, and how to run and clean it.

WATER! You will need a Clean pure source of water! RO/DI water IMO is the only way to go. Using this eliminates algae problems that can ruin your tank down the road AFTER you have spent all the time and money to get it set up. If you have no access to RO water distilled from walmart will work also but with a 90 gal you will eventually want to look into an RO/DI unit at your house so you can make your own water.

You will need salt. Pick most any major brand and you should be OK. Instant Oceans, Tropic Marin, Kents. You get the idea.

Read why and how your tank cycles before you start. This seems to be a major hurdle for those new people entering the hobby. If you understand the purpose of your tank cycling and what is taking place, it will take some of the anxiety of starting a tank up away and make it more enjoyable.

Last but not least, READ about this wonderful hobby and what it takes to have a successful thriving tank. You can google for just about anything out there. RB is also a great resource to stay plugged into.

This hobby takes time. Lack of patience and lack of reasearch will bite you in the wallet big time. It is the main reason people are not successful and leave the hobby.

Glad to see you here and asking questions. There is no end to the answers!

Hi guys - newbie here.

Currently I have a 10gal Freshwater tank and soon would love to move to saltwater. The setup I'd like would be something similar to flockboss'. Money wise, what would be a ball park figure with his configuration and no fish. Just want to get an idea before I make the pitch to my wife...lol

Blind, why would you suggest Flockboss do something different than you did? You say you have about 1.82 lbs of sand per gal. Flockboss, if he adds his 160lbs of sand, will have less per gal than you at 1.78 per gal.

I admit thats a lot of sand but Maybe Flockboss has read up on the benefits of a deep sand bed like we have and thats what he wants to achieve. The amount of denitrafication in a sand bed that deep will be tremendous and I think the benfits out weigh the cons here. The important thing is that Flockboss knows why he wants that much sand.

Heres a link Flockboss about deep sand beds. Start reading and just enjoy the ride!

yes i know that and i had a dsb and i removed it and it became a pain. i said that because i have seen a tank with a dsb and then a tank with a regular sb and after about 2 years the regular sandbed beat the dsb becuase the denitratifaction comes in handy at first then the toxicns just build up and up and up till they leak out into the tank and that is one of the causes of ots. and i am trying to lower the sand bed slowly with out realsesing toxicns. i thought out the advice i gave. and in the long run a shallow sand bed will pay off. and like i said if he spends that money on lr it will benifit his tank more than a dsb in the long run.

I agree old tank syndrome can happen.

On the other hand I only ask that you read an ubiased article explaining the pros, cons and variations or options regarding a DSB by one of the most respected men
in the saltwater business.

Here is the link again.

so blind you are saying that a DSB is only good for a limited time, what about having it in the sump? should it be changed out every once in a while or just mixed up more often so toxins dont really have a chance to build up or is messing with the sand a bad ideal?

Instead of looking for a quick answer EVERYONE would do themselves a load of good and read the article provided! Don't just skip it because you do not want to take the time to read! The people who provide you with articles or push you to do independent research are the people you want to help you. You are not going to be knowledgeable in this discipline by taking the shortcuts and not knowing why you need to do one thing or another. There is too much of that manure going on! READ! Take the time to educate yourselves, otherwise those who have the know-how and know the whatnot are not going to want to take the time to help you!
