Mussels ok if they're not contaminated. It IS the Gulf. Sponges cannot be exposed to air or they will die, period. I don't know about sand dollars. I think mussels help clearing nitrates, but no sure. Diversity in a tank is always a good thing, IMO.

I would say no on the sponge because of it being dead??? It may be okay if boiled in so forth but if you do I would keep an eye on all your tank tests...

The only time I've seen live sand dollars is while scuba diving and they were partially burried in the sand - i wonder if they would be beneficial for a home tank?? They are a pretty purple color when alive...

Sand dollars need, you guessed it, a lot of sand. Minimum of 4 inches deep and 10 square feet of sand surface space. No very fine sand (mud) though or they'll suffocate. also delicate with respect to temperature. (Guess who has been reading their Marine Invertebrates PocketExpert Guide...me!)

Ahh - see the wisdom I gain here To be completely honest I have not yet been in a LFS!! The only experience I have with them is coming to my house and telling me I need thousands of $'s of different equipment and changing half of it - providing me with few weeks of service and then poof - But it is time to let go of the bitterness and check a few out!!!
So far I've been internetting for everything (not at the getting fish stage yet!!)
