Ok, so the return pump is not pushing enough water back to the tank compared to the overflows draw from the tank. You can try to reduce the distance the pump has to return the water (vertical distance) or you could get a larger pump. I am not sure why the pump is making a huge sucking noise unless the water level in the sump is not high enough to cover the pump completely then you will be getting a lot of tiny bubbles in the tank which is not good either. Hope this helps!

Most overflows sound that way, it is the water "falling" into the hose as it is gravity fed, as long as the level in the sump is correct and the level in the tank is maintained, then you are fine. That sucking sound is totally normal for overflows. ed. Unless the part of the overflow is in the tank and you are getting air in the "U" tube that is used to siphon, then that could be a huge issue as you could loose siphon and possibly flood the tank. But I think your noise is from the back (drain) side of the overflow.

The sound was definitely in the back. I hard plumbed the system using PVC over the weekend and added two ball valves to control the water flow.....The water now remains level in the back of the overflow (its not getting "sucked dry" anymore). I will prbably add another smaller pump to the system to increase the water flow inside the tank as I add more live rck, and will be able to adjust the ball valves accordingly to match the increased inflows. The fish store thinks that the pump and overflow were mismatched......

That is possible, but not likely if you didn't get an overflow in one or the other. The falling water sound is just how it is with overflows usually. I am not sure about your ball valves that you put in, to me it seems it would limit the flow through your sump, but if it is working for now keep it there ![]()
