Default Red Algae

hi, i have a 55g tank with approx 50lbs live rock & mixed smooth & rough live sand. i have 12000k/65w daylight/actinic lighting. i have a protein skimmer & trickle filter. i had a problem with red slime--got rid of that, was using grocery store bottled drinking water--not recommended. now using local grocery store purified water, have to add a gall every other day for evaporation. i have 3 shrimp, 6 hermit crabs & 2 damsels. i'm now having a problem with -i think- it's red algae on the glass of the tank. i clean it off every 3-4 days. i leave the lights on approx 12 hours a day, is this too long? all my water parameters are within normal limits, i'm wondering if i should add more creatures or wait awhile. any suggestions would be appreviated. many thanks, you guys are great!!

Default Re: Red Algae

Is the algae slimey or hard & brittle? If slimey then it's cyano. Try getting some additional flow in the area you are getting this algae. Also test your water for phosphates. High phosphates will contribute to the problem. You could cut back your lights to 8 to 10 hours.
