Default Salt creep and filtration

I'm running 2 Emperor 280's with bio wheels. I understand these aren't ideal, but bought them before I knew better. I'm getting a lot of salt creep. Silly question, should I just wipe off and keep an eye on my salinity? I buy my water pre-mixed so I don't have any salt or a hydrometer. I've been just pushing the salt back in the water - probably not the best idea??? When I have the funds for a decent skimmer, can I just dump the power filters altogether? Do I have to upgrade my lights to run a Berlin setup? I only have the 48" florescent that came w/ the tank and a 420 nm acticnic.

I strongly urge you to get a hydrometer, and keep an eye on your SG. If you don't have corals, lighting is not so important.
