Default Filter ?

Right now I'm running a mechanical filter with carbon filters and a bio wheel because I can't afford a sump. Should I be using the carbon filters? and should I go ahead and get a hang-on protein skimmer? The tank is 40gal FOWLR and is well established.

How much did you pay for your bio wheel? 40 bucks...that could of been your sump. I do not use carbon on my bio wheel for my qt tank because it filters out anything you put into the water. Skimmers improve water quality big time. I say given your situation a skimmer would be a good idea. Try a AquaC.

Thats the thing, I didn't pay anything for the whole aquarium. A friend of mine just needed to get rid of it? So I could get a sump for around $40. Any recommendations on where to buy one online?

You can build one out of a 10g tank or a 20g tank. Mucho cheap.
