Recommended Readings

Hi, can anyone help me out with the alkalinity readings? What should the reading be? My test doesnt elaborate much about it. Also, what do you think works well for lowering my phosphate level? I have used a couple different things and nothing really seems to be working. Thanks!!

Somewhere between 9 and 11 dKH is about the ideal range.

lilli... i would try using some sort of calcium hydroxide... this has a 90% phosphate reduction rate according to a study i read the other day (which, conviniently, i cant find again)... but adding chems like that can harm other things... i refer to the wise words passed down to me about marine care... when in trouble or doubt, change the water... scrape the algae, vacuum that junk up and put clean water in... u leave some algae to see if its actually reducing the phosphates... hopefully this works for ya... remember, change the water every 2-4 weeks minimum, especially in a reef tank... i use just hang on canisters and a water change can save alot of hassle, and money at that....

The best things for lowering phosphates (in this order) IMO are as follows:

Water changes
Filter maintenance
Good protein skimmer
Chaeto algae in a refugium
Phosban in your filter

If none of those work, try checking out your water source.
