cycling question

When I tested my water tonight, the ammonia=0, pH=8.0, Nitrate=10, Nitrite=0.5, salinity=1.030. Last week ammonia was 8.0 and rest was negative. Why are my nitrate and nitrites increasing, and my salinity decreasing? Thanks for any help. Deb

Default two reasons...

wo reasons i can think of... 1. Salt Creep andevaporation - lowering salinity 2. either over feeding or lack of filtration... maybe it's time for a filter and water change....

Is it OK to do a water change now? I will change the filter media when I am off work on Monday, was told not to change the water until cycle was done.

I was told that when cycling your readings will fluctuate till cycling is complete.

ok your salinty or SG is on the high side, it should be around 1.025 so it has increased due to water evaporation. i would not do water change yet! just add some fresh ro/di water to dilute it. we change water to help maintain ammonia and you have not spiked yet. the ammonia of 8 was probably a soft cycle. sometimes this happens it is best to wait for a hard cycle before you start adding fish and such. if you are still reading some no2 and no3 they will increase the ammonia and you will eventually have a hard cycle. have you added all your rock and sand yet? sometime more rock and live sand after a soft cycle will cause you to hard cycle a little sooner.

Wether to do or not to do a water change during a cycle depends on who you talk to and sometimes even when you talk to them.Just about the only thing that could scare me into a water change would be amonia.Amonia is a killer that commands respect.

Deb, your tank has been up & running for some time. Your cycle should be long over with unless you've added more LR, had a fish or something die & go un-noticed, or over fed. High salinity no doubt a result of evaporation - top off to your normal point & retest.
