Default Losing some live corals and more...

Hi. Been a while since I've been here posting since I did my tank re-de.

I have added some live corals and polyps to my tank recently, and have also added a few other inverts...

I just added a Hammer Coral ( Euphyllia ancora ) and I have noticed that it seems to be dying and I'm not quite sure why?

I have a coral life compact floresent light with 2 65 watt 10,000k bulbs and I was told that this should be fine for the coral. I have also added two groups of polyps that seem to be doing just fine and a starburst polyp which also seems at this point to be doing fine.

I have also had and lost over a three week period a Blue Lankia Starfish, and a Sea Cucumber, Tiger Tail, while I still have a Serpent Sea Star, Fancy Tiger-striped, and a Sand Sifting Sea Star.

My tank is 55gallons, and I'm at work right now so I cannot give specific answers as to my water chem right now, but I have not seen any radical shifts inwater chemestry for several months now so any suggestions would be of great help. The only thing I can figure as far as the hammer goes is improper placement in the tank.

Also, does anyone have any ideas about cleaning a sand substrate?

By far I am no expert at this reef stuff.. I can only tell you what I been told and Im sure some expert will tell you something differnt but I have a 55gallon tank and I was told you need at least 3-5 watts per gallon for corals.. Right now you have 2.36 watts per gallon. That to me would be something to look at. But Like I said Im new just telling you what I have been told. Like you said about placement maybe you need to place it a little higher in the tank.. Hope this helps.

yes, you need much more light for them to live and be healthy. compact florescent lights are week as it is and you do need around 5-6 watts for best results. You might look into a T-5 or MH to help out.

Now to the linckia...and quite possibly the cucumber. Your water parameters are going to tell us more about what happened to your tank. I don't think this question can be adequately answered without that info.

Cleaning sand substrate...hermit crabs, nassarius snails...sand sifting critters like stars gobies. These are just a few examples. It is generally believed that it is best to not mess too much with your sand bed.
