It depends, what kind of snails are they?

Yellow algae?
Any pics available?
Different snails eat different kinds of algae. It depends on your algae and what kind of snails you picked up.

Many people like having their cleanup crew being at least 1 critter/gal of water. I have about 1 critter per every 2-3 gallons and that has worked well for me. Ultimately, you will probably want to at least double your cleanup crew size, by getting more snail of a different type or two that munch on different types of algae.

I did 1 critter per gallon and after my cycles all my crabs were starving and one crab even at one of my snails. I though it could be that it was hungry or wanted its shell. So I got more shells and cut back on some of my cleaner guys. I have about 30 total in a 54g.

Just out of curiousity Greg what types of snails/crabs do you have...I think I remember you saying you had some red legged hermits and maybe even some blue but I wasn't sure as to what type of snails.

in my 55 gal. I have around 20 snails 20 hermit crabs. 2 emeralds, sea urchin and a arrow crab for my cleanup crew. (i have 250 watts of metal halide) and my tank stays super clean! and when food is low for them i just throw in sea weed.... or cabage.

My tank is a 110 gal, and I have 30 total crabs and snails of assorted varieties. They seem to keep up very well.
