Default RO/DI arrival

My RO/DI filtration system arrived to day!!..Woot! This weekend I will install and move on to my next project which is a refugium i'm planning. My question on refugiums is about substrate. So mineral mud or DSB? And why?
My next purchases will be towards the set up. Overflow box for DT, protein skimmer and return pump (with all the plumbing hardware in between). Some advice and input would be wonderful.
