Default Diatom to clean tank

Hello, all.

I'm new to the saltwater world. I use a diatom every now and then to clean my freshwater tank. Usually I stir up the gravel bed and allow the diatom to go to work. Can I do the same with a salt tank?

Thanks.

a diatom filter is a filter that literallly cleans EVERYTHING!! you shouldnt use it permantly because it takes out the nutreints needed for a saltwater fish tank to function. but if you use it every once in a while, thats fine but dont use it for more then a couple of hours just to be safe.

yea. I wasn't sure about the nutrients part since it seems that the small micron size of nutrients would not get "captured" in filtration with the likes of waste matter. However, I will take your advice and only use it when I feel there may be a need to polish the water. I imagine that if my water is good, I should never have to polish it.
