Default live rock placement

I recieved my shipment of live rock from mr. marine today and realized how hard it is to place it lust right in the tank. There is a lot of growth on them which is great so I don't want to put them in wrong and not see whatever grows up. I have a narrow 55 gallon tank and was wondering if the rock should be leaning against the back glass? it would help me stack better just need a little help thanks..

Some people say it should be a few inches from the tank to allow for circulation and in case anything dead gets caught back there. I have tried to do that without any luck, so some of mine is leaning on the tank, you can try rock putty to adhere the rock together or drill the rock and use pvc to stack it...

I also have a 55g tank and as you are, had a lot of problems trying to find good spots for the rock. I think it is mostly because of the narrow design of the 55.

I started with the rock leaning against the back glass but as stephanie said, the flow god pretty bad behind there. So now there is about 2-3" between the rock and glass.

Other problems with stacking against the glass is that it makes a great haven for fish to hide behind & thus you may not see them. If you have a good size fish & it dies back there you have no recourse but to tear your aquascape apart.
