Default hitchhiker crab

I had a crab come in on live rock. LFS calls it a rock crab. He is about 1 inch in diameter. I never knew I had him until I was moving rockwork. Should I leave him or get him out of tank?

I would say if you didnt know he was there he hasnt done any damage so you have time to do some research to find out what it really is.Even if you took it to the lfs for identification I wouldnt bet the crabs life on them being correct.

If you cant positively ID the thing just get it out of there. Its not worth the risk.
Rock crab...yeah, gone.

Ill agree with Jim here and say pull it out, I dont trust most crabs. I would put it in my sump though, big rock crabs make good detrius cleaners.

Look anything like this?

You don't want him in there if so. Is it hairy? What color are the claws?

You also don't want to go mad monkey on the tank. You can build a trap with a plastic bottle and a chunk of food for that.

The one in my tank has the pinchers. A couple nights ago I noticed my foxface/rabbitfish has a tiny piece of his back fin gone. I should probably get crab out.

A week ago I started cycling live rock from a friend who hasn't had it in water for a year. I scrubbed it very well. I will have to redo my aquascaping at this time which will make catching crab easy!

The dead live rock has no smell and 0 ammonia. Can I go ahead and put in DT.

Hi I have never used this site before, but I noticed the picture of the crab on here. I have one that is identical, only slightly darker. I found him eating one of my margarita snails. He dragged him into a crevice in the live rock and started ripping him out of his shell. Can you please tell me what kind of crab that is! I am so curious and worried aswell. I have him seperated but I need to know what he is.

I think mine was some sort of gorilla crab. Crabs are quite opportunistic...you have already seen how it is getting what it needs from your snails. I would consider finding a way to trap it. Probably came in off of your fiji live rock. I have heard that some have had luck cutting the top off of a plastic soda bottle, inverting it and tossing in some food...crab can get in but cannot get out.

I was able to trap it, but Im not sure what to do with it now? Should I bother taking it to a LFS or should I just kill it?

If you have a sump, you can toss it in there...if not, I would be prepared to kill it. That is what your LFS will probably do.
