Default specific gravity?

ok this may be a newb question but I see a lot of people with different salinity settings. now I know certain fish and species require different levels. is there a happy medium? what would be a target salinity?
all of my experience has been in fresh water, I have not had another marine tank setup in years so I am trying to remember everything..

1.026 is what I raised my tank to once I added some coral, when it was FOWLR I kept it @1.024 ppm. This could be totaly off so dont take me on this I belive that I read a lower salinity perhaps 1.024 would help out in keeping parasites & diseases away.

well it depends on your location in co we go for the lower end since we all ready have 10% less oxygen at this altitude

I do the same thing. In the red sea the salinity is as high as 1.035. So if you look at the difference, that is a lot. LFS keep theirs lower to A: save money on salt, B: they think it helps reduce the chance of getting disease (which is not true unless its down to 1.011 but then coral wont thrive at that level).

Most people keep their readings between 1.024 - 1.026

1.026 - 1.027 is the salinity of NSW ( unless your in the Red Sea as pointed out ). Calfo as I remember recommends a bit lower 1.023 - 1.024 to increase oxygen levels. The FO guys can keep it a bit lower, like 1.021, but I wouldnt, long term low salintiy could stress the fish IMO.

I keep mine at 1.025, but occasionally it'll dip to 1.024.
