Default Protien skimmer advice

I am cycling my live rock and sand right now and I am going to choose a skimmer for x-mas. I have been told to buy the "AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer w/ Maxi Jet 1200". I have found it for 165 on ebay. I have a 55 gallon fowlr. Will this work ok? thanks !!!

It will handle up to a 75 gallon tank. Shop around. You might get a better price.

Yes, that will work alright. AquaC skimmers are up there amongst the top brands for the HOB skimmers. The key to all of the AquaC skimmers is to make sure that the pump is large enough or you wouldn't get the skimmate amount that you'd liike. As some point, you may feel like upsizing the pump to a Mag 3 to pull out a little more gunk if you get one of the units that don't produce as well as others.

Yes it's a very good HOB skimmer. Do yourself a favor and get the mag 3 version.

Thanks for the help! i will get it before I add any fish. I have another question. I am committing a huge rb sin by using tap water (from what I have read). But for now I have no choice. Will the water conditioners hurt the live rock I have added to the tank? I would appreciate the help thanks. again i am only doing a fowlr for now.

No, the water conditioners won't harm the LR. What they do is neutralize chlorine (as does aeration) and some of the conditioners can bind heavy metals so they settle out of the water. The tap water itself can contain something in it that over time will harm your LR though. The biggest reasons why RO units are a near must have for most of us is that once you have reef lighting algae forms quickly if you have poor water quality and corals can get harmed easily if your tap water has chlorine or heavy metals like copper in it. Besides, who here do you think would say they would want to save $100 by not buying a RO unit and put $1000+ in corals and fish in jeopardy.

Thanks for the response. As I get more involved and want to move to corals and better lighting I will buy a better water system thanks. I just want to get my feet wet and see how I do with what I have for now, I know this is an expensive hobby.
