| New to the Hobby (Getting Started/Setting Up) Think you can upgrade to saltwater? Your probably very confused, but remember ask questions and you'll get your answers on here! |

 cycling with cocktail shrimp is there a certain amount per gallon you are supposed to use? also when should a protein skimmer be turned on? during or after cycle? thanx  |

| Re: cycling with cocktail shrimp You only need 1 or 2 in there without the cocktail sauce! Running the skimmer depends on whether you are trying to cure LR or not at the time. Generally I always run the skimmer. It will only take out what's in there. Just don't do any water changes until AFTER the cycle is complete. Otherwise you will slow down the process.

| Re: cycling with cocktail shrimp i have only some dead live rock (marco rock) that was cured already but when i turn on the skimmer it goes nuts and starts pulling out alot. i thought the skimmer would pull out the stuff i needed to cycle , no? |

| Re: cycling with cocktail shrimp Is it a new skimmer? Sometimes the new ones will do some funny things until they "break-in" so to speak. It might be something coming off the rocks. I know my skimmer goes crazy if I put a new filter sock in the I don't rinse thoroughly. |
