Default Overflow Rate

What would be a normal overflow rate for a 65 gallon tank. I am going to be ordering a Reef Ready 65 soon from Glasscages.com but they dont tell me how many gph the return pump should be for the sump. Thanks.

They probably dont tell you because you can put different sized bulkheads on the pre drilled holes. I woud say right around 1200 would be good. If its less, its no big deal, in fact it is probably better for the fuge and skimmer.

On my 240 I have 2000 gph between the two return pumps. I'm not sure if mine is good, too much or too little, just thought I'd throw it out there. I wonder if there is a recommended rate???

I was thinking of doing about 350-400 which would be about 5-6 times the tank volume per hour. That plus the 480 for the 2 powerheads and you get around 880 which is well over 10 times per hour. They dont tell you the size i dont think, but they do say that they are "heavy duty schedule 80 bulkheads.....whatever that means.

It's going to depend on what size bulkheads you have for the drains, and how many. My 120AGA came with 2 1" drains for around 1200GPH. I can't run that much through it though, otherwise I get a terrible gurgling from the drains. I estimate around 900GPH on mine, then I have a couple powerheads to get into the 3-3500 range.

yes the recommended rate is no less than 5 times your total tank volume.
A 10 gal. tank should have no less than 50 gph through the sump.
Your 65 should be no less than 325 gph through the sump, and at least 15 times the total volume (including your returns) for total circulation.

The normal size drain on a 65 is 1 inch and will carry away very close to 600 gph.Conventional flow recomendations are 10x for fish only,20x for lps and 30x for sps corals.Calculate for head height and elbows and get a pump that comes as close to 600 gph as you can get but dont go over that. The rest of the flow will have to come from recirculation pumps in the tank.I have always recomended using three average output pumps instead of two high flow pumps.
