Default Got my new light. Now what?

I just got a JEBO ODYSSEA 48" BLACK QUAD Compact Flourescent Fixture for my 55 gallon tank. Wow! What a difference! It has two cooling fans on top , mounting legs, 8-LED Blue Moon lights (4-Duals), and 3 power cords for timer use. This unit comes with 4 - 65 Watt bulbs - (2) 12,000K daylights and (2) 03 true actinics. ( I copied that) It came with no paperwork (I got it on ebay) so I dont know what lights to leave on and when. I don't even know how to connect the mounting legs. I can't find any info on it. I've emailed the seller, but you guys are a little quicker on the response!
Also, do I need to worry about heat?
Last but not least, the light doesn't cover the whole top. Do I need to cover the open part with something?
I have a RO/DI unit and a protein skimmer on the way.

Hello Michelle, and welcome to RB.I wish you had come in and asked about that fixture before you bought it as it has a less than stellar reputation. But it seems to work so we can move on to tother things. As to your light cycle, thats easy just have one pair come on at ,say 8 am.then the second pair comes on at 10 am.That night you want the first pair to go off at 6pm and the second set to go off at 8 pm.Leave the moon lights on all the time the main lights are off.You can shorten the main light cycle if you like.I would also say that since you bought these used you may want to get new bulbs soon.Compact flourescent bulbs only last about a year. You dont absolutly have to have a cover unless you get the kinds of fish that like to do swan dives. As for attaching the legs I cant help you but there are others on RB who have that fixture, they can help.Tell us about the skimmer and r/o unit, make and model.

Well, I have a 130w version for my 55 in addition to a 260w coralife.

Anyway, the legs should slide on from the sides. There is a little metal bracket you need to losen first though. then the metal part fits snuggly into the "ditch". Then when the legs are in the place you want them, tighten the metal piece up with a screw driver.

Im not a big fan of glass because it can keep the heat in and also it will block a lot of the UV light that helps coral thrive. BUT, it is all up to you!

Yeah, but in more than 5 years of fish keeping, I have only lost 4 fish due to jumping, and 3 of those were because of another aggressive fish chasing it. And the other one was my lion, and that was just a freek accident.

You will be much happier with peacful....I know I was.

uhhhh,,,,if you send me a link with the lighting system I will have a better idea.

Well, 1 of those were freshwater hatchetfish who are known to be big jumpers. one was my wrasse and firefish and one was my lion. The wrasse and firefish were chased around by my damsel fish which is one reason I dont want him anymore. Maybe what I will do is get a mantis in my 40g and feed my damsel to him

That is the unit I was about to get for my tank, but then I was stupid and went with PC instead

If you get that unit, you can buy the individual reflectors seperately for about 20$ each. that will allow you to keep most types of corals and anemones!

A few years back there were problems with these lights. The company has since kicked up their quality. Lately I have been reading a number of very good reviews on them.

I've heard the same thing. The new units are supposed to be much better, but I've been told that you should always inspect the wiring when you get them. Many times, where the wiring connects to the unit, bare wires will be exposed on either the inside or outside of the unit.

First, I would like to tell you it is a brand new fixture. I was glad to hear that they have upgraded them and they're reputation is better now. It has 3 switches on top. The first switch works the 4 tiny blue bulbs, the second one works the bright white bulbs and the third works the bright blue bulbs. I know the bright white lights are the day ones, but I'm not sure which are lunar and which are the true actinics. I assume I can get a timer that will work all 3 sets of lights for me. Right?
My new RO unit is a SpectraPure 90GPD Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier and my protein skimmer is an Odyssea Aquarium Venturi w/ pump.

i have the 36" version. I turned my actinics on at 10 and off at 10, my daylights on at 11 off at 900. moon lights on when the others are off. THe legs were a little tough to mount. I had to loosen the metal bracket on the legs and you have to take them apart to do that. But then they slide right in. Oh and as far as quality, the fans done move much air at all, i have not burnt out any lights or balasts yet and have had the lights for 3 months now. I also dropped them into the tank once...thank god for GFI! But they turned right back on. A top would be hard to do with those legs. But im gonna have to figure something out cus i want firefish

the bright white lights are 12000k and the actinics are 420 and 460nm and the little blue LED's are the moon lights.

Like native said, have the actinics come on an hour or 2 before the white lights and go off an hour or 2 after the white lights. then you can have the LED's on all the time.

Thank you Artictwist!
I got my leggs on already. I didn't know I had to take them apart! Thank you also for explaining everything to me as well. I can't believe how much of a difference the lights make. I wish I would have done that years ago. Now when my skimmer and my RO unit get here I can do a water change and get serious. I'll be looking for a timer today!

i suggest one of the digital strip ones. they arent that expensive and will be more accurate. I have to keep adjusting mine because i have three separate ones that arent digital and they never go when i want them to. I think ive got it about right. RO is key. I was using well water. BAD. such a bad algae problem.
