Default R/O?

anybody know what the running price is for a gallon of R/O water Just wondering for my new 180 to see if it would be cheaper in the long run to buy a R/O system for myself

at walmart it is .68 cents a gallon. multiply that by 180 and you get 123. Then add in all the water changes you will be doing and you get a few hundred dollars. It is a lot easier just to buy an RO unit. Plus after you go out and buy 180 jugs of water you sure will have a lot of empty jugs sittign around!

You never know what you're getting in those jugs. Having your own RO/DI unit - you have complete control.

Some LFS will give RO water out for free since they know that it will probably help go you to be their loyal customers. Otherwise, around here, I think it's around $0.69+/gal. Either way though, you should test the water and see what the TDS is to make sure that is is pure water. Many places don't change their filters nearly enough so that water quality of the RO water you buy may not be any better than tap water. Just of the peace of mind fact, an RO/DI unit is worth the cost, plus it'll be cheaper once you figure in the gas money to get the water + the water cost. Your tank will probably evaporate on average about 3 gallons per day. 3x365x$0.69=$755/yr in evaporation water, plus the water costs from your routine water changes (10%=18galx2xper monthx12months/yrx$0.69/gal=$298). Total that adds up to over $1,000/yr, not including gas money. An Ro/DI unit + filters cost much less than that.

you can attatch them to the faucet or garden hose. There is a myriad of waya to hook it up.

At my old house, I had a faucet adapter hooked up to supply the RO/DI unit and the waste water drained down my washing machine drain pipe, but you could easily have it drain into a sink (as long as you are carefully not to put the stopper in the sink).
