Icon14 Blue Crabs

I am a high school teacher who will be teaching Aquatic Science in the new school year. I am trying to get experience with saltwater aquariums. I currently have a 90 gal with 2 hermit crabs and 2 shrimp (all given to me). The tank has been going for 9 months now.

I have no budget coming from the school so everything is donated or out of my own pocket.

I have a 70 gal aquarium that had lizards in it and I just cleaned it and recaulked it and am calking in an upper brace today. I am not sure the tank will be adequate for filling completely (thinner glass than my 90) but it should be able to hold up to half a tank of water.

I would like to set up a blue crab tank but cannot find any information about their needs. I will buy a live blue crab from a local market that has them for sale for people food. What else do I need for a crab? Does it need rocks for hiding? I am going to assume it will need aeration because I will not have live algae. What kind of filter or lighting will it need? Are there any special needs?

Please help so that I can get it set up and going for next year.

I am unsure of the needs of a blue crab. I will research it and see what I can possibly find.

But mainly I wanted to say--Welcome to RB!

Here is some reading on Blue Crabs. Personally I think you could make a lot of better choice of crabs that would be easer to keep. Gust to name a few Anemone Crab, Boxer Crab, Arrow Crab, Sally Lightfoot Crab and Emerald Crab. There a lot more remember crabs are fairly messy eaters so you will need to keep your water parameters up with water changes and a good skimmer will help you a lot. Also crabs hide a lot of the time. There again Blue Crabs are cheep and if you don't mind killing them do to lack of care would be easy to replace.
