what would be the definition of a good skimmer? how often would it be full? how much would it collect? with mine I have to clean maybe 3 to 4 times a week. it collects about 1/4 cup of nasties and fluid before I dump it. it came with my sump system the CPR CY192
CPR CY192 Filter (Filter Only) (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Filters > Wet/Dry Filters > Units Only )

would you consider this a good skimmer?
it collect plenty of junk and there it is never empty so I would guess its doing its job..

Im not a fan of the seaclone skimmers. I had one as my first skimmer and it was prettymuch a waste of electricity.

Well if Seaclones are junk what kind of protein skimmers would be good to go with instead?

If you compare how much gunk a Seaclone pulls out to how much the good skimmers pull out, you'll see how poor of a skimmer they truely are. The better skimmers are going to cost more, but will help keep your water quality (hence, fish and coral health) much better. Are you going to have a sump under your tank where you could install an in-sump skimmer or do you need an external, HOB skimmer? You generally get the most "bang for the buck" on in-sump skimmers.

Seaclone was out first skimmer, and it was more expensive than the CPR I have now. Did not collect as much and was a PITA to clean.

All i've heard is bad about seaclone from everyone who has recommended me skimmers. I decided to go with an octopus xtreme skimmer 150

As far as good brands go, the bigger names include: Euroreef, Octopus, Deltec, among others.

Typically the bigger the skimmer is, the better it will be because if will pull out more waste. Plus most of the more expensive skimmers are adjustable as far as skimming wetter or dryer.

Seaclones in general are hard to dial in, and don't collect much skimmate compared to some of the better rated models. I had one when I started in the hobby and I also had issues with some leaking where the elbows click in. If you must use one, make sure you replace the o-rings often.

As I said, bigger is better.

Here's an 8.5' skimmer from Deltec.
Cost about as much as my car.

Deltec - Aquarium Equipment - protein skimmers, turbo skimmers, calcium reactors, fluidized reactors, kalkwasser stirrers

I wouldn't consider an Octopus skimmer as one of the bigger name skimmers, although they have put out some nice skimmers at great prices for the past couple years.

I was thinking that Octopus was formerly ASM which I thought were known to make some good skimmers and now they've shifted to the Octopus line who is building a name for themselves with a pretty quality product.

As far as hang on skimmers go, are the Aqua C's good ones? I'm looking to go less noticeable than my huge berlin turbo hang on...

Octopus is a different company than ASM. The main internet supplier of ASM skimmers switched to selling Octopus skimmers though because ASM kept threatening to stop supplying them skimmers because they were selling the skimmers with too little markup. It confused a lot of people when ASMSkimmers.com stopped selling ASM skimmers and started selling Octopus skimmers.

I've always had good luck with both in-sump and hang-on AquaC skimmers. Just make sure that the pump size is one size larger than the max recommended pump.

I was on reeffrontiers.com forum for about 2 weeks trying to find a good skimmer and a person named skimmerwhisperer who goes around and evaluates skimmers recommended the octopus to me

I have not heard too many good things about this skimmer. why risk it anyway, you can' be succesfull without the best! equempment around your tank, everything will just keep braking down.
