Default growing pods in sump??

Can I grow pods in my sump? What do I need in there? Can sump be turned into refugium? I have a sump (rated for 75 gallons) under my 29 gallon tank. There are bio balls and a carbon filter then a blue spnge like media that the water passes thru. Then I have an empty space where my pump submerged. From here water goes back to tank. I'll be getting a EV-120 skimmer but I know it wont fit there so I'll have to hook it up outside of sump. Can I utilize this space for cultivating pods? What should I put here? Rock rubble? Sand?

I read your other thread and I doubt you will be able to make a fuge out of a tank to small for a skimmer.I would recomend you get the largest tank you can fit under your stand.A fuge is not only a great place to grow pods it is an imprtant part of the denitrification process.

I have an 8" x 9.5" area, the water level comes up to 5.5". The skimmer I'm getting is rated for a 40-150 gallon tank, so it is a larger unit. Any other suggestions for my setup? I've heard of people utilizing this space and also removing balls and replacing with something else. Wish I would've gone with refugium instead of just sump.
Tank's been running for about month and 3 weeks. When you talk about denitrification, is it possible to have 2.5 nitrates one day and 3 days later 0 w/o water change? My nitrates have been at 0 for 3 weeks now and all I've done are water top offs. I tested the water my cleaner shrimp came in from LFS, nitrates at 20! Can rock and sand completely remove nitrates?
