Default Hello All.. new here.

Hello,

So i wanted to start a salt water aquarium for years now and just got lucky with getting a 55 gallon for free. The preivous owner had it up and running (salt water) for about one year. It has a Marineland Magnum 350 canister filter and a Bio wheel filter up top not sure what brand. I have some question's, the tank when i picked it up had about 2-3 inchs of live sand and about 2-3 inchs of water left in it. Thers also some brown algae floatin in water and some of it on the back glass of tank. Now should i drain the rest of the water out and try and get rid of the brown algae or what? The lighting is'nt so good only one blub.. im lookin to get the Current USA PowerCompact Orbit Fixtures. First i wanna go FOWLR then maybe later down the road and get some Anemones. I'm looking to get two circulation power heads and a Protein skimmer.. anyone know any good skimmers for around $150.

Thanks alot and hope to be up on these forums alot, now that i found them hehe.

I would get rid of the water.Fix up a new batch, add some live rock(1 1/4 to 1 1/2 lbs per gallon)you didn't say anything about a sump,I don't now if you have room ,but if you do I would add one.The canister I would throw at the neighbors kids(my lawyer says to tell you thats a joke). If your going current think t5s.Especially if your thinking of an anemone. For a skimmer check out the Octopus brand.
