Icon6 Buying a larger tank

Good morning everyone.

I have a 55gal. long right now, but I want to get a larger tank, maybe a 75 gal ( possibly a bow, that might take up the same amount to space but will be a bit higher than the 55 ) does anyone have any suggestions as to a particular manufactorer? And of course I would have to get all the equipment that would fit a 75 gal.

Any suggestions are much appreciated, and this is not going to be done immediately, so that I can look around alot to get the best prices I can.

Thanks in advance.

Lew

Manufacturer doesn't really matter because unless you get it custom ordered they all have the same 48x18x20 footprint

May I suggest a 48" 90 gallon? This way you can keep your current lighting and space? This way you will gain so much more water flow with an under tank sump? I found mine used and in mint condition, stand, lighting, star fire glass tank and a few more small details for $650.00. And dont quote me on this, but from what i can see, the larger the tank, the easie it is to maintain...

Just a thought, but good luck on it

Ditto on reefcouple as far as the size. However, lighting is another question, because the tank is taller. The light's intensity decreases by the inverse square of the distance, in otherwords double the distance and the light is one quarter of the intensity at the bottom.

Look on e-bay and local craigslist. I just found an acrylic 90 gallon reef ready with stand and lights on e bay for $305 - complete steal. I'm going to use it as a fuge for my 300. If you look on e bay type in both aquariums and fish tanks...

Icon6 Re: Buying a larger tank

Just got back to the forums today.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. I might consider the 90 gallon step up instead of the 75, but than I would have to move the tank to a different spot, which would make viewing inconvient.

I was actually at my local Petsmart last weekend to get one of my dogs groomed and I saw a 150 gallon tank with a stand and was just foaming at the mouth. That would definetely require a relocation, but oh!!!! What a tank it would be. That would be my ultimate dream. Just not sure if I would go reef or stay with my fish and live rock.

Obviously, the lighting and filtration would have to be kicked up several notches, but again...oh the beauty of it all!!!!

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to take my bush incentive check, and help our economy along a bit!

I just did the same thing. I decided to go from a 55 Freshwater to a bigger tank. What I found was that if you go with a sump setup on a 90 and used a hang on the back filter with a 55 that the space isn't much different. My 55 was off the wall 6 inches and the new 90 is only a inch or so off the wall. Other than depth it is the same length. I can definitely tell a big difference though between the tanks and a 90 offers more swimming space for a smaller tang or wrasse than a 75 would. Overall I am happy with my setup and can't wait to add fish.
The only way I could go to a 125 is if I mounted it in the wall but it really is a cost and space issue since you would need a much longer wall and 72" light fixtures, more live rock etc. for the 125.
