Is it true that i should be checking for iodine if plan on keeping shrimp and other inverts so they can molt. If so what are good lvls. Got up this morning and my coral banded shrimp molted everything was ok just wanted to know for future reference.

Here is what I know about molting and iodine. If the shrimp is molting you have enough. What the right level is I dont know.If you have to much it is dangerous.

The right level of iodine is .06, but they can also tolerate .02. As long as you are doing normal water changes you should be fine.

I have .02 and have no plans of ever messing with those levels. My shrimp have no problem molting.

i read from some expert that said that adding iodine is a bad idea and he showed studies that said they dont need it to molt. He said thats a common misconception and just make sure you do water changes and have good water chemistry

I add iodine to my tank every two weeks. I have never had any problems and my shrimp shed with ease. Now given I do not add the "suggested amount" but I still add it on the nose every other Saturday.
One thing Ive always wondered is if their molted skin add to the nitrate levels?

I do not test for Iodine. My coral banded shrimp has molted and doing great. I do 25% water changes monthly. This amount may be different than others recommendations but it is working for me. And by no means I am saying this is the only right way to do it.

Perhaps, I mean, the clean up crew finds some sort of nutrition out of it and they will produce waste from it...probably not an excitable amount to fret over, though.

I've always wondered whether to take it out or leave it in. So I came up with this really dumb agenda that my mind accepts. I leave every other one I see in the tank. The others are food.
