Icon14 Omnivore Diet

I recently purchase a tomato clown, which has proved to do very well so far. I placed a veggie clip in the tank but he hasn't been interested in it at all. I'm just wondering if the veggie clip is necessary, or if he is going to get his necessary diet from the brine shrimp I feed him and algae off the live rock in the tank?

Hey leathaw. Congrats on the tomato clown. Tomato clownfish will eat almost anything it is fed, but the diet should include meaty food items such as chopped shrimp and herbivore preparations. A high quality marine flake food, rich in spirulina algae (however I personally don't like using flake food = phosphates), as well as freeze dried and frozen foods are readily accepted. Tomato clownfish eat algae, zooplankton, and small, aquatic crustaceans as well. I feed my clowns New Life Spectrum all purpose formula pellets and frozen mysis shrimp (not tomato clowns though).

I would suggest looking for the San Francisco Bay Brand Frozen Saltwater Multi-Pack. It consists of marine cuisine, emerald entree (nutritional vegetable matter), omega-3 enriched brine shrimp, and squid. I wouldn't think the veggie clip is necessary for a clown.

These guys have a cool behavior. If the anemone dies, or there is no anemone, the clownfish will adapt by feeding its rock. It will literally chose a rock in the aquarium as its own, and faithfully drop food on it at every feeding, and even sleep near it at night. Good luck with him/her!!

Yah, I know. I thought that was odd too when I read it, but I thought it to be neat behavior so I posted it.
