thats what i thought... i just checked it when i got home from work and 2 of my small nassarius snails are festing on it lol..

Your crabs and what not should eat them. It wont cause a spike in levels on a 55g tank. I leave the shell so when you have a crab that wants a bigger home he doesnt have to kill someone to move out.

they seemed to totaly clean out the snail shell.. i went through a cyno algae period which is all gone now.. just have a lil green algae problem now some spots on the sand bed actually looks like green grass..

I leave snails in. Usually they are devoured by the time that I realize they're dead...and as Tonz said...it gives other snails another option for a home.

Snails can switch shells? I would leave it in for hermit crabs
