Default water good enough

I'm using my tap water for my tank. Now before you go nuts, I have a general ionics softner and RO system. This should be fine for my watersource right.

Why not get a TDS meter and test it? Then you will sleep well at night after you have invested possibly $1000s of your hard earned money.

I would suggest you both get a tds test done.It is not a good idea to make recomendations of this nature when the operational capabilities of the filter and the original water conditions. If this culligan filter is such a good thing why in over 25 years of salt water experience are you the only two I know of who have one.To what standard do these things filter water?Do they remove chlorine?chloromines, slic ate, heavy metals?

It may be the same company that filters water for NASA but it probably isn't the same filter. I don't know your income but I would bet that the government has a bigger water purification budget. Invest the small amount of money to test the water so you will be sure.

Native: There are more people that have these type of filters. I removed 2 of them last year doing Kitchen remodels.

HEY! Culligan Man! Hahahaha

In all sincerity guys, just test and make sure its ok. If its not OK you might not find it out for 6 mos and then its too late.

I think your confused. Its not one of those little screw on the faucet filters. It goes threw a charcoal filter that stands about 4 fee tall, then threw a RO system. Also uses about 160lbs of salt.

Yup, they have been around for 30 years. Since Native is 104 years old he will probably say longer.

Corey, I am not 104,I am much older than that lol.I looked up your ro unit last night at a dealer site.It say they remove chlorine odor and large chunks like rust and sand. Now I have to say that dealer sites are not the best place to get info, but I couldnt find a web page for them.

Looks good! It would be prudent to test it and make sure the water it produces is good enough for your tank.

Those are all things you will need to be testing for but we are talking about the water you use to mix your salt with before you add it to the tank. You will need a TDS meter ( total dissolved solids) They run about $25 on Ebay. You can get an inline meter that measures TDS as it comes out of you RO/DI or a portable one that you can test water anywhere with.

why not just take a sample to your LFS and have it tested, that should settle the debate

Good idea! Only I would have 2 stores test it. Someday...hopefully some of you will understand what it is to put a thousand hours into this hobby and thousands of dollars. Leave NOTHING to chance. If you do sooner or later your equipment will be on sale for 20cents on the dollar and you will be giving livestock away. Happens everyday.

Testing the water is key as you can see by the other posts.

It is my understanding that distilled water has absolutely no (KH) therefore no buffering capabilities causing large swings in PH.Is this also true for RO/DI water?? Can anyone shed some light on the carbonate hardness of RO if any? Heavy metals like copper found in most tap water will KILL corals but not fish.

Yes...Distilled water has 0 (KH)causing large swings. RO has 8 dH creating much more stability. RO would be my water of choice!
