A refugium acts exactly the way it sounds. It is a refuge for beneficial organisms in your aquarium that would otherwise be harmed by other livestock. Your tank can survive and sustain without a refugium, if you choose your livestock wisely and you research what your putting into your aquarium. I recommend starting simple, learn, and then upgrade: As I plan on going from my 29gal to a 300+ gal tank now that I have a better understanding of the hobby.

| Sump/refugiums serve several purpose's.They increase your water volume and therefor your tank stability. It can provide your tank with a small but constant food source in the form of pods.(if you dont keep fish in it).It is an extra water cleaning facility in that it will aid in phosphate and nitrate removal. There are those that will scoff at the idea of a reef tank without a skimmer,I am not one of those. There is a new trend toward all natural reef systems with what may eventually be called "zone tanks".One of the most popular zone tanks is a tidal grass bed. These are not tanks that fit under your stand but more like a second or even third display tank.I am going to attach three articles on the subject.the first two are two parts of a five part series where the last three parts are not published yet.Charles Raabe the author of the first two articles is a seriously hands on reef guy.He lives and works on a reef in the Philipines.I am sure that somewhere in his articles there will be a link to his home page.I recomend you spend a few hours there reading. | Dale -- Thanks for the articles. They were great. Elliot (e_baer) was thinking of setting up a transitional tank - going from a rock/reef to grass sand bed. I wonder if this could help him. I'd think you'd need a tank > 100 gal for it though. |

My question. For my size tank. Can i get away from a hangon refugium? I know the size is not that large for the added water like a sump. I'm just trying to see what options i have. THanks

Any size fuge you can put on or under a tank is a plus.I am talking about a 55 gallon fuge as a second display tank and a 20 gallon sump under the tank. You could get an hob overflow and have a nice sump /fuge if you want.

Tristan I think Elliott already has those articles.
