Sand quesiton

I have a 55gal. with LR and CC, the cycle is done and I added a few snail to the tank for maintenance, until I am sure that I and the tank are ready for fish. If I want to change to sand, can I add the play sand, and put one bag of live sand on top? Or do I have to do lfs bagged sand with the live sand on top? Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Deb:confused:

You don't want to use play sand- you're only asking for trouble. Get the sand at the lfs & put the live sand over that. You might also want to get some Grunge from www. garf.org - that stuff is loaded with all sorts of goodies.

I've heard mixed reviews on crushed coral all together. I hear it produces more nitrate, and can be a problem or cause you to do water changes more then you'd want. My LFS only uses bagged sand, it's not even live sand. And after a while all the organisms you can ask for start to florish in your sand bed. If I were you and I'm sure people can argue this but this is just what I did, lay down a 3 inch sand bed with zero crushed coral and then you can get a scoop of sand from your LFS that will give you all your bacteria and organisms like your worms and pods and what not. I've had sand in my tank for less then a month and out of one scoop of LFS sand I got bristle worms, speghetti hair worms, pods, and star fish all over my tank and it's looking good.

Crushed coral is a thing of the past. Go with sand. I'd follow what passinetti2007 says.

Thanks so much! I plan on putting down sand, maybe this weekend?? I work full time and am in school for my master's degree, so time is very precious to me now. Will try to get this done before I add any fish. Will my 5 snails and 5 blue hermits be OK? Will the tank cycle again?? Thanks, Deb
