Default wet/dry-refugium

Does anyone have any ideas on how to turn a wet/dry filter into a refugium? My nitrates are extremely high (160 ppm) and I cant get them down. I have about 45 lbs of live rock and 40 lbs of sand in the tank and 25 lbs of live rock rubble in the filter. The tank has been cycling for almost 3 months and the only inhabitants are a few snails that have been in there about 3 weeks. All other parameters are at 0.

Just get rid of all the bio balls and jam that sucker full of LR. Then get a light and some cheato from myself or Ebaur and call it a day. Are you running any other type of filtration?

There are no bioballs, just live rock and its filled to the top. And as far other filtration I have a protein skimmer. As far as cheato is concerned, do I just put it in the resevoir area with the return pump and skimmer or do I need to seperate it?
