Default Oceanic 95G Wave Reef Tank

The LFS delivered the tank and sump on the afternoon of 8/2/2007. That evening, the owner delivered 144# of Fiji LR literally right off the airplane. Tank was filled and all pumps on deck. The Turboflotor Multi-SL skimmer worked very hard the next several days.

Attached is a photo of the delivered tank, sump and other goodies.

Here comes the rock!

This is the way it arrived from the aiport - about 40 pounds in a box... still smelled like the ocean!

First night with the LR sitting in the saltwater "soup" - the beginning of the long curing and cycling process...

Lord, grant me patience...

Five days pass, with daily 15-20% water changes, twice daily cleaning of the Protein Skimmer...

Who would have thought that a grown man could sit in a chair for hours staring at a pile of rocks?

Spotted numerous tiny dead bivalve shells in the LR - interesting stuff flushed out of the LR by siphon during the frequent water changes...

But here was something alive!! Spotted a hungry Peanut Worm muching on LR and debris under an overhang in the LR.

Look at the sandbed in the photo. - Just above the sand, you'll see the extended Peanut worm extending from his hole in the rock toward the right where his head was grazing on the bottom. He looked like a small earthworn, but with bands around the body. When extended out of his hole, there was 2-3" searching for food...

LFS says he probably won't survive the cycling, but he has lasted a week!

Progress. Night photo taken after 8 days of cycling...

Plans for the weekend - add another Maxi-Jet 1200 and a Koralia 4 to enhance circulation and turbulence. Have been making tests of PH, Alkalinity, Nitrite and Nitrates and the numbers seem to be trending favorably - this rookie is just not sure of the meaning of all this. Learning here and from other sources. Continue 10-15% water changes every other day. Top off sump evaporation with RO/DI and Kalkwasser. Calcium up to 250.

Grown man still staring at rock...

Gotta love this hobby.

If you keep doing water changes your tank will take much longer to cycle. Part of the cycling process is letting your tank build up beneficial bacteria. The water changes prohibit this. Yes your tank will cycle but it will take more time.

Great looking tank! Keep us posted

In the first week, the ammonia was off the charts (higher than my test kit could measure) - I assume it was due to stuff dying off in the uncured fresh live rock. In a week the ammonia is trending down slowly and nitrates are coming up...I am holding off further water changes until I see what the tests reveal in another 48 hours...I plan on doing a full range of tests and will post them here.

Thanks for the advice.

Water tests and updates...

As suggested, no water exchanges so far this week. Trying to get a true reading of what is going on in there. Received and added the Oceanic Bio-Chamber to my Model 1 sump earlier today. Only used the foam pad that came with the chamber plus several layers of filter floss (No charcoal). Adding the chamber to the sump definitely cut down on the air bubbles and turbulence generated by the intake hose, and suddenly the Skimmer started producing more.

Here are todays tests

Temperature 76.5 (down from 82 after I removed the glass cover to enhance evap)
PH - holding solid at 8.2 even with Kalwasser "feedings" to replace evap
Salinity - 1.024
Ammonia - 10 (down from "off the chart" a week ago)
Nitrate - 2 (down from 40)
Nitrate - 10 (down from 30)
Alkalinity - 250 (up from 225)
Calcium - 300 (up from 230 a week ago)
Phosphate - .3 mg/l (new test)
Magnesium - 450 (new test)

I will eventually be using 2x250W MH lights, so am pleased that the water temp has come down. Dreaded the thought of adding a $#@% chiller. Adding a small portbale fan to circulate air across the sump helped.

Went to Wally World and bought a cheap 10G "aquarium Kit" to start a QT in several more weeks.

Man still staring at rocks... and loving it.

Second hitchhiker spotted...

Previously I posted picture of a Peanut Worm that had survived the trip from Fiji in my LR. This morning I spotted a tiny bivalve crawling on the back glass of the tank. Attached is a photo - sorry it is blurry, but he is only about 3/4" long, so it was very hard to get a close-up... He looks like a tiny mussel, but I am clueless.

Your tank seems to be doing a great job so far. I would sugguest that you address a crucial area that I am just learning to do after 3 years. When you do your water changes, make sure you siphon a little out of your sump as well especially the area that the over flow water drops into too. Sometimes you will get debris build up or phosphate precipitate down there and it can add to higher metabolite levels. So just siphon that out as it develops as well. Also, you may want to get a wavemaker to alternate the current from your MJ1200, they make great waves if they alternate. Also, with you setting up your MH system, are you going to get an automatic top off system or simply monitor your sump level manually? Since your evaporation may increase due to the centralized heat of the metal halide, I would opt for an A.T.O water top off system and place a small 10 G tank or 5 G bucket in your cabinet with a MJ600 to pump the water over, I will send a picture of my setup when I get home so you can get an idea.

Hi Wes

1. A.T.O. - Good advice. I would like to see your pictures. I am looking for something that is "bullet-proof" (meaning it won't overflow or run dry and burn up the pump while I'm away)

2. Siphon the sump - another good idea which I will implement - there is some crud down in there. (I cleaned the foam filter on the Mag 7 pump intake this morning; it was pretty dirty.) Lots of debris circulates (on purpose) when I do water changes.

3. Wave action - I am thinking about that, because I note thast several of the coral I am interested in adding like that type of motion. I will be using one of those Coralife timers to time my Aqualight 250 hood (ie. moon light 8:00 p to 8:00 a, Actinic from 8:00 a to 8:00 p and MH from 10:30 a to 6:00 p) The same timer can be configured to give wave or tidal action. Do the Maxi-Jets do well being turned off and on? I have read that the Koralia 4 don't like it much...

Thanks again for the input.

A.T.O is pretty bullet proof from my experience, I'm not sure how it does it, but when my 10G top off tank is empty, it has an emergency shut off to protect my pump and once i add more water i just reset the A.T.O and its good to go. It comes with two float sensors and adjustable heights for them to keep your sump at a constant level for your skimmer.

Yes, cleaning the crud out of the sump and return pump is very important to the life of the pump for sure.

MJ are the first choice for dosing pumps and wave maker style powerheads, I wouldn't suggest any other brand for constant on/off cycles.
