Default Fuge setup

I can't locate a thread that I was looking at a few weeks back, but I'm making my new fuge this weekend and wanted to get opinions on the order of the compartments one last time and also share my idea or design. I'm getting a RR 75 gallon AGA and since the return and overflow are next to one another, I figured I would have my fuge setup like this: Protein Skimmer/Return area shared -- baffle -- fuge area, so bascially just one baffle separating the two. I say this because I want low flow through my fuge and the location of the return hole is no where near the othe side of the tank. I'm doing a 30 gallon tank, so I have about 36 inches to play with. Suggestions???? Also, in my fuge as of right now will just be deep LS, LR rubble and Mangroves. I don't really want any other macro algae at this point and my mangroves are doing a hell of a job growing like weeds.

Default Re: Fuge setup

I would never put my skimmer and return in the same compartment. The skimmer needs to be in an area with a constant water elevation and getting as they function the best when they are in the smallest size compartment required to house the skimmer. Could you divide the sump into three areas? One of the areas could even be on the front side of your fuge or skimmer if you have the room so they don't need to be spread out over the entire length of your sump. A good source to get ideas for a sump design is going to Melevsreef.com | Acrylic Sumps & Refugiums

Default Re: Fuge setup

Try this one on for size. The first compartment should be the return/skimmer compartment. Then at least 2 over under baffles to get rid of return and skimmer caused micro bubbles(filled with lr rubble). Then the return section. The third section would be the fuge, fed by a 1/2 inch pipe T'd from the drain line and coming across the tank. This section would flow into the return in the oposite direction.A valve can control the flow rate and the fuge can be deeper than the return section.
