Default Jasonanatal's 60 gallon Custom Low Iron Glass Rimless Aquarium.

Hello everyone, I have ran into some limitation with my current Nano Aquarium and have pondered back and forth with the idea of construction my own personal Low Iron Glass Rimless Aquarium. However, there is one hurdle which must be overcome first and that is locating a "Aquarium Safe" Silicone. I have been searching online and getting information that is either conflicting or vague at best as to what Silicone is "Aquarium Safe" and can it be purchased in larger size to reduce overall cost. I have come across the AGA "Aquarium Safe" Silicone but the largest tube it come in is 10.3 ounces for an average of $10.00. I peronsally believe that I'm going to require a large amount of "Aquarium Safe" Silicone since I'm planning on constructing a Cube Aquarium with the dimensions of 24" Height x 24" Width x 24" Depth. I'll also be using 0.25" Thick Low Iron aka Starphire Glass. Allowing me to create a nearly 60 gallon Cube Rimless Aquarium. I'm going to be taking a trip to some local Aquariums and Home Improvement store so that I can compare the ingrediants of the AGA "Aquarium Safe" Silicone to that of what Home Depot stocks. Something that I should look out for are Silicone with Any anti-mildew chemicals. Any suggestions or information on this would be greatly appreciated. Personally I'm hoping to located the Black Silicone for asthestics.

Truett, thank you for the information. I'm going to check Home Depot or another home improvement store for this Silicone.

Finding_nemo, well I didn't actually run out of room. There are a few issues that were a bit unsettling which I will explain later in my JBJ 28 gallon Nano Cube HQI Aquarium thread. But I just felt it my be better to just make what I needed.

Finding_nemo, the issues that were present did not have anything to do with the water volume of the 28 gallon Nano Cube HQI Aquarium. I had very detailed calculations for the dosing of chemicals and a detailed regimen for processing RO/DI water with Synthetic Sea Salt and having it closely match the parameters of the Aquarium water. An issue at hand where the design of the lighting which created a level within the upper 1/4 of the Aquarium that no Corals could be placed or would show signs of Rapid Tissue Necrosis due to the elevated stress to name one. My thread is located on Reef Central, Manhattan Reefs, Talking Reef, Reef Builders, Marine Depot, Clams Direct, Nano-Reef and Nano Tank forums. Take a look and enjoy the reading.

GE silicone I and II have biologicaly active ingrediants not at all recomended for aquarium use.I believe it even says so on the label. At least two of the lfs around here have the right stuff in stock maybe the lfs in your area does also.

Would silicones rated ''food safe'' be ok for aquarium use?

If 1 more person suggests GE Silicone I or II for a tank I'll scream. Read their product literature & the tubes - it is NOT suggested for constant exposure to water. As Native said, they contain biocides & other chemicals intended to keep mold from growing on it.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to start a war or make any one scream. I used GE silicone 1 to rebuild a 55 gal tank and haven't had any trouble with the tank leaking or the fish dieing. It is deffinatly up to the person as to what they want to use.
