Icon14 live framing

has anyone tried the live framing technique that was featured in Marine Fish and Reef 2008 annual?
i was thinking of trying this but with modifications.instead of using the hook method i was thinking of making multi level square elevated platforms out of pvc to cradle the live rock.not only can i vary the height for a real look but i could stack the base rock against the frames to conceal them.my lfs suggested to mix live rock and lace rock, but the lace rock will be too hard to sculpt for the hook system.has anyone used pvc as a scaffold and had any success.
