Default Lava Rock ?

I don't know much about it at all.
I am upgrading to a used 135g that comes w/ hob overflow, canister filter and 100 #"s lava rock etc...
Question :
Is lava rock useful at all in a reef tank?
I have 2 reef tanks I am going to combine in the one so live rock I have plenty of, but I was curios if I could use the lava rock as well for filtration?

question #2
It comes w/ Hqi fixture, to go from T-5's to hqi do I need to acclimate my live stock , and run the daytime less hrs a day?

I have a mixed reef thats starting to lean towards sps.

I think the general consensus is that lava rock is probably not good in a reef. May contain metals that are detrimental. Yes a short acclimation time is not unheard of but to go from T5 to HQI you can probably just put two or three layers of window screen on top of the tank and run the lights a normal schedule. Remove a layer of screen about once per week and you should be good to go.

Just a side note: Lava rock, depending on type, can contain silica, sulfur, and Iron along with other metals.

Get rid of the canister filter also. Not good for a reef tank, see this thread
