| I think the general consensus is that lava rock is probably not good in a reef. May contain metals that are detrimental. Yes a short acclimation time is not unheard of but to go from T5 to HQI you can probably just put two or three layers of window screen on top of the tank and run the lights a normal schedule. Remove a layer of screen about once per week and you should be good to go.
