Default Skimmer Plumbing Question

Ok, I just bought a larger skimmer to keep up with my upgraded tank, and have a question on how I should hook it up. I bought a ETSS Reef Devil with mag drive 7 and it should process around 400 gph from what I was told. In the past I always had my skimmer sitting in the first chamber of my sump, but that is out of the question with the size of this skimmer. I was wondering if I could hook up a ¾” hose from my 1” gravity fed overflow directly into the mag 7 pump inlet so it would skim 100% of the water going into the sump or if I should just set the pump in the first chamber of the sump and skim that way. I don’t know if the overflow could keep up with the pump, or if it would slow my overflow down, but thought I would ask. Thanks

wouldn't it be better to skim the water after it has past through the refugium sections right before it returns?

I have always had the skimmer first. My sump is set up to have the skimmer first along with the overflow water, the center sand rock cheato, and then the return pump. Should I try to set it up different? Mine is exactly like the one shown in this pic.

If you skim that way you will take out the benifits of the refugium. Basically easiest setup feeds back into the tank from a central location that is feed from both skimmer and refugium.

There is a thing as over skimming. You can remove wanted elements making it harder to control there levels. Bumping up the skimmer size is good but that skimmer looks a little over rated for a 125.

The skimmer is rated for 75-150 gal tanks, and is the smallest regular skimmer ETSS makes. I know several people who use this skimmer on 100-150 gal tanks with great results, and thats why I bought it.

Cool that will work. I thought i saw a 1000 in the pic and figured it might tank size. Not familiar with that skimmer.
