Default Do I really need live sand???

Ok I have been doing research like a wild man before commiting my $$$ on the set up of my second SW tank. This time I really want to do it the right way. I won't bore you with my mistakes on the first one.

My question is : If I stock my reef tank with a generous supply of quality live rock, do I really need to lay down live sand?

It appears that "LIVE" will spread throughout the ecosystem. Will not the sand become "live" in time?

Is there some intrinsic value in laying down every thing Live?

I await the comments

DT

I beleive that the use of Live Sand is just as important if not more in the cycling process. This is just my opinion, but i bet others will agree with me.

There is some truth in the fact that your sand will become live over time. But it is much better to jump start your system with the live sand.

I love live sand, I heard that live sand is part of the ecosystem in your tank+live sand speeds cycling time, critters love it!!!

Default Just need to know the science

I can understand that the absolute best way to go is to buy the all the most expensive, state of the art stuff out there. Now I am kind of a practical guy that has to have the reasons for all that I do. Also I hate waste anything.
If I go out and blow a wad of money on something and find out later I did not have to, I get, well, pissed at myself.
Soooo I think from all of what I have researched and read that I could lay down a nice bed of sterile sand and then let it get "live" ed by the rock or seed it with a small amount of live sand.

so I put this up to the masses for discussion and feedback

I am no expert so feel free to slash and burn my assumptions

Live sand will have benificial bacteria, and plenty of live critters that will sift thru your sand keeping everything airated and eating ditriutis and food left over from overfeeding.

You'll get things that you won't pick up from the live rock.

That is fine if you want to buy mostly just regualar sand and mix live sand with it. That is what i did. I used roughly 125lbs of reg. sand and 80 lbs of live sand.

It would help to at least get some live sand. Even if it is a small percentage. You don't HAVE to spend the money for all live sand.
