i would assume that most if not every one started out with a betta from a little tub at the lfs and placed it in a small hex tank. i did. we were so exited but little did we realize he was only the start of an obsession. i some times stop to think about the little betta and it saddens me. lets face it he is a throw away pet. most die from inexperience on our part. others just flushed, i dont have any idea of how many are lost every year but i bet it is way too many. so i would like to propose a betta boycott. if a store sells bettas in little stupid plastic containers with 2 holes in the lid, you know what im talkin about. dont give them business of any kind and if ya got a pair like me, on your way out the door let them know why. who else will try to help the poor betta if we dont.

HA...i got a beta, then moved up to oscars, then a bass, then moved up to a 55 gallon fresh, then got the wild idea with my ex gf to set up a 29 gallon salt. and the rest is history. Now both my daughter and my little sister are gettin the itch.

yea i started with a betta in a 2.5 gal with a rly small filter and the moved up to a 10 gal fw the worked up to 30 gal fw and now im up to 90 gal reef

wow look at that! do you see a trend in my aquirium sizes? they times by three each time.... 2.5 times 3 is almost 10...... 10 times 3 is 30...... and 30 times 3 is 90.... whats next a 270 gal? lol

If I recall correctly, and it's been a long time, I bought my first 20 because my son came home from some carnival with goldfish in a bowl. They all died of course, he got upset, I bought the 20 and.....5 tanks later, the rest is a lot of expensive history

I got started due to a neighborhood kid hosting an MDA fund-raising carnival in his backyard sometime in the late 70's. One of the games he had was tossing ping pong balls into containers containing feeder guppies. A few guppies came home and were kept alive in an unfiltered goldfish bowl (frequent water changes). Before I knew it, I had 50 guppies in a 10 gallon aquarium. The little buggers were quite prolific.

I've gone through goldfish bowls,10G,20G,55G,72G,125 G.....

By the way, I still have a 56 gallon guppy tank in my game room.

lol I has a 10g w/ goldfish I think. Got a 30 long at a garage sale for 2$. Then I moved up to 55g w/ oscars. Later on I got an old 30g from a friend and have that and the other 30 setup as reef/sump.

Yeah i def started with a betta but mine actually lasted over year, then I moved on to tetras and guppies and then onto saltwater addiction
