What is the depth of your 125g? 60"L x 18"W x 24"D or 72"L x 18"W x 18"D?

717w / 125g = 5.7w/g <<<< Plenty of power to keep SPS under. The depth of the display will determine the height at which the coral should be placed.

I have 3 x 175W MH on my 125 and it supports some SPS. But I find that they do best towards the top of my tank. Some more light demanding SPS will not do well.

I agree with Frogfish as I also used to use 175w halides over my 125 gallon tank and it was enough light for most SPS to survive, but at the lower levels the more light demanding corals struggled some. As for clams, I used to keep a crocea clam on the very bottom in the sand and it did very well.

I've had bright blue Crocea clams on the bottom and, IMO, Maxima and Crocea clams have very similar lighting needs. Some other types don't need as much. If you decide to get a maxima clam and if it seems to not be getting enough light, raise it up to the middle of the tank and it should be fine.

It's tough to tell from the pic, but star polyps have a purplish mat when they are closed up, although it doesn't look very purple from the pic. Other options could be a type of sponge or encrusting montipora. Can you peal the coral up or is it hard? Also, how thick is the coral?
