Default green algae

I have a 55 gallon tank -- set up for 8 months. I now have green algae on my substrate. What can I do? All suggestions would be wonderful!

Do you have a clean-up crew? Also what type of water are you using - tap or RO? Tap has all sorts of nutrients that will cause algae to grow. What are your test results? How long do you leave your lights on?

I did not get a clean up crew. I do have several snails and I am looking to get a few more. The nearby fish store does not have any right now. I use dechlorinated tap water. I will take the suggestion and put distilled water in next time. I did a partial water change too. Thanks for the suggestions.

it's the water. had the same problem and started buying r.o. water went away. also get a yellow tang ( easiest of the tangs) and he will help keep algae down also. if you can't afford buying water from the lfs or a r.o. purifier look into a water delivery co. and get a few extra bottles a month left for the tank and then you have nice clean water to drink also.

Hey for those of you that buy water at the lfs. How do you transport it? I have a few million gallons of demineralized water at work I just can't think of a good way to transport.

What exactly is ro water? And how do I get it? Do yellow tangs really help with algae?

RO stands for Reverse Osmosis a type of filtration that really cleans out water nicely. You can buy an RO filter for your home or buy it by the gallon at water store or at your LFS (local fish store) sometimes has it

Oh and a yellow tang is too small for a 55, all of the species of tangs can not thrive happily in a small setup, try a lawnmower blenny or some assorted species of hermit crabs and snails.

i've had a yellow in my 50 corner for three years, and he's a happy little bugger. but yes lawnmowe blennies are another great cleaner fish, probably even mor so than a tang.

Thanks for the insight on the tangs vs. blennies. I never heard of them. Is the RO water worth it or would distilled water work just as well?

Tangs are great. I also have a Lawnmower Blenny who grazes constantly.

I bought (2) 7-Gal. Plastic Water Storage Containers (blue) from Wal-Mart located in the camping section (~ $15ea).
