    Default Cloudy water

    Hello everyone.
My mother who lives in MN came to visit me in AZ about a month ago and after watching my tank and shopping for some corals with me decided she wanted to get a tank when she returned home. She purchased a 46 gallon bow front. I told her that I could walk her through setting it up and any questions she would have. Well now she has a question and I don't know the answer because it is something that I have never had to deal with. She set up her tank a week ago now and its still so cloudy that you can't see the power head at the back of the tank. She rinsed the sand before putting it in the tank, she put a container in the bottom while filling so the sand didn't get stirred up, she used tap water (yeah I know RO water would of been better but she was in no rush) and used tap water conditioner, she added salt and started her HOB filter. Her salinity is correct and her PH is at 8.
The salt she used came with her used tank and so did the water conditioner. I've started up many tanks and they have always been clear after 24 hours.
    Any thoughts?

There are a couple reasons why the tank could be cloudy - a bacteria bloom or fine sand particles, my guess for a one week old tank is the later. Once bacteria gets established, the fine sand particles will drop out of the water column and everything will clear up. To speed up the process, she can add LR and/or make sure that she has thick filter floss in her HOB filter.

Hey thanks for the advice. It seems to be a little better every day and will probably just take some time. She plans on picking up some live rock today so hopefully thats speeds the process up.
    Thanks again
